AN INVESTIGATION ON DETERMINATION OF EXCHANGABLE CATIONS IN SOILS AND SELECTION OF A SIMPLE METHOD SUMMARY A number of .roethods e~ist for determination of exchangeable cations, such as Na, K, Ca and Mg in soils. The main princip1e of the methods is treatment ofsoil with anather cation by which exchangeable cations are replaced and to measuı:e the amount of cations in the solutionby a suitable method. In most cases, 1 N ammonium acetad has been used due to same advantages. The purpose of this experiment İs to find a more simple method that is in agreement wİth ammonium acetad method. In this research, the amount of exchangeable cations found by the method of U.S. Salinity Lab. Staff (1954) is chosen as standard. On the other hand, soil sample of 3 gr. is treated with 15, 25, 40 and SO 'ml of ammonium acetad using different shaking time of 10, 20 and 30 minutes. The results obtained from the treatments are compared with standard method. Ten soi! samples taken from surface are use.d in this experiment. According to the -results, the amouots of Na and K obtained from LO minutes'of shaking of the soi! samples with 25 ml of ammaDium acetad are in agreement with standard method. Ca + Mg in soils containing salt and free carbonate exceeds catian exchange capacity and same other methods should be used in this kind of soils. In noncalcareous soils, the determination of Ca + Mg in the solution obtained by this \Vay can be measured. The simple method can be used in soi! testing laboratories and for same other purposes. Furthermore, this method is valici for nonsaline and nonsodic soils. Keywords :
