Abstract :SüleymanDemirel Üniversitesi TIP FAKÜLTESİ DERGİSİ: 1998 Haziran; 5(2) Gebelikte Betametazon Uygulamasının Maternal Hematolojik Etkileri Baha Oral Tanju Mandal Demir Özbaşar ÖZET Gebeliğin geç dönemlerinde betametazon uygulamasının maternal hematolojik etkileri araştırıldı. ABSTRACT THE MATERNAL HAEMATOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF BETAMETHASONE DM PREGNANCY To investigate the maternal haematological effects of betamethasone injections in late pregnancy. Thirty pregnant women withoutfever ör clinical infection and with a singleton pregnancy between 27 and 34 we-eks' gestation were studied. A whole blood count was performed before and dailyfor 5 days after two 12 mg intra-muscular injections of betamethasone given 24 hours apart. The steroid injections produced a significant increase in total white celi countsfrom 11.1 ±2.2 to 132 ±2axl03 cells/ml and 135 ± 3ûlxl& cellslml on thefirst and second day after treatment respectively (p=0.0001). There was a significant increase in the neutrophil count by 38% and a mean decrease in the lymphocyte count by 19%. The use of betamethasone injections to mature fetal lungs in late pregnancy results in a leokocytosis. This infor-mation may be helpful when monitoring for infection. Key Words: Preterm delivery, betamethasone, \vhole blood count, perinatal infection. Keywords :
