Abstract :Objectives: The purpose of this study is to determine nursing students’ exposure to injuries with needlestick and sharp instruments during clinical applications and the precautions taken in these situations.Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive type of study was composed of nursing students N=589 , who studied at universities and 339 students who accepted participation in the research and who had no missing data in their forms. Data were collected by the study using the individual identification form and a questionnaire containing features related to injuries with needlestick and sharp instruments. In the evaluation of the data, mean, standard deviation, percent and chi-square tests were employed.Results: The average age of the students who participated in the study was 22.51±1.56. It was determined that 31% of the students who were injured with needlestick and/or sharp instruments mostly occurred in internal medicine clinics 38.8% and injector needles 72.1% . During the injury, 29.3% of the students did not use protective measures, 68.6% did not report injury, 86.4% had had hepatitis B vaccine, of those vaccinated, 44% n=60 of them did not have post-accident analysis.Conclusion: Student nurses, during clinical practice, are at risk from injury by needlesticks or sharp instruments due to the frequency of usage, it is proposed to increase the skills and competencies for implementationKeywords : Needlestick and sharp instrument injuries, students, nursing, prevention and control
