Abstract :Objectives: The aim of this research is to develop a practical assessment tool that researchers and clinicians can use to evaluate the stress of a newborn. Study Design: This is a methodological study. 212 newborns, treated and cared for at the neonatal intensive care unit, were included in the study. Data was collected from newborn information forms, the Newborn stress scale and the Newborn Comfort Behavior Scale COMFORTneo . The scale was assessed in terms of content validity, concurrent validity, internal consistency and the inter-reliability among the observers. Results: Content validity index of scale is between 0.90 and 1.00. The Newborn Stress Scale, which has a Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.65-0.81, is highly reliable. Results from the item analysis indicated that item-total correlations r=0.20-0.66 were satisfactorily high. The concurrent validity found there was a positive strong correlation between the scores of the Newborn stress scale and COMFORTneo r=0.58-0.84; pKeywords : newborn, NICU, nurse
