Abstract :Objective: We aimed to assess the rate of compliance with hand hygiene rules in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine.Material and Methods: This study was done between March 1st. 2015 - March 16th 2015. Episodes of care were observed during working hours and were classified according to professions, and type of contact as invasive or superficial. Compliance with hand hygiene rules was observed before and after contact, between two contacts and during patient to patient transfers. Results: 180 contacts 120 superficial 66.6% and 60 invasive 33.3% were evaluated and the rate of compliance to hand hygiene rules was 80%. When compliance with hand hygiene rules was assessed according to professions, the highest compliance rate was found in nurses at 91%, followed by physicians at 75%, and residents at %62. Conclusion: We determined a rate of 80% compliance with hand hygiene rules. We believe that the implementation of regular education, frequent monitoring of compliance and posting appropiate warnings, with positive reinforcement, such as the use of visual reminders of educational materials, will lead to higher adherence to hand hygiene rulesKeywords : nosocomial infection, hand hygiene, health personnel
