Abstract :Aim: This study aimed to evaluate pediatric nurses’ experien ces and opinions about medication errors and use of generic drugs.Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive study evaluating pediatric nurse volunteer participants’ experiences and opinions about medication errors and the use of generic drugs and was done in İzmir. The study population consisted of 111 pediatric nurses who work in a University Hospital and a Public Hospital between May 2010 and July 2010. A data collection form was given to nurses including questions about medication errors and the use of generic drugs in accordance with the literature. The data was analyzed using the program SPSS 16.00. Results: The mean age of the nurses was 31.2 ± 4.7 years, 98,2% women, 64.9% married, 43.4% had one child, 56.8% with bachelor’s degrees, 51.4% worked in a Public Hospital. In total, 25.7% made medication errors while 46.3% reported knowledge of medication errors made by others, 10.8% made generic medication errors.Conclusion: Medication error rates are considerably high. It is recommended that training programs related to drug administration should be improved as a preventative measure, relative information to nurses should be updated, and additional preventative procedures about generic medicines be implemented
