Abstract :Objectives: This study was conducted for the purpose of evaluating effect of oral mucositis on life quality in cancer patients. Patients and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted between 01.07.2011 and 01.01.2012. The study was conducted with 121 patients who were diagnosed with oral mucositis graded in Oncology Service at Research Hospital of Ataturk University. The study was commenced after the permission had been obtained from concerning authority, and individuals who were informed about the purpose of the study and accepted to participate were included in the study. Data was collected using Form of Personal Properties and SF-36 Life Quality Scale which was adapted to Turkish community by making its validity and reliability studies for chronic patients in assessment of life quality. SPSS 20.0 Software was used to evaluate data. Results: As a esult of the study of the study, it was determined that those who receive 1st cure treatment and have 1st level oral mucositis, live in city center, have no children had higher scores in sub-scale of "physical function”; those who are have no other chronic disease except for cancer had higher scores in sub-scale of "emotional role”; those who have no children had higher scores in sub-scale of "physical role”; those with 1st level mucositis had higher scores in sub-scale of "pain”; those who live in provinces, have no children and 1st level mucositis had higher scores in sub-scale of "mental health”; those who have no children and receive 1st cure treatment had higher scores in sub-scale of ”energy”; those who receive 1st cure treatment had higher scores in sub-scale of ”social function ”; those who have 1st level oral mucositis, live in city center, are singles,have no children and receive 1st cure treatment, had higher scores in sub-scale of "general health understanding”. Conclusion: Depending on decrease in oral mucositis level; those who have 1st level mucositis suffer from less pain, are mentally healthier and have higher understanding of general health.Keywords : oral mucositis, cancer, life quality, nursing
