Abstract :Purpose: The aim of current study is to detect the effect of emphatic skill education program offered to nursing department freshman students on the development of their emphatic tendency as well as emphatic skills. Patients and Methods: The study has been conducted on a semi-experimental one-group pre-test/post-test pattern. In order to detrmine socio-demographic features of students, "A Survey of Demographic Features” was utilized to evaluate emphatic tendency and skills of students Emphatic Tendency ETS and Emphatic Skill ESS-B scales as developed by Dökmen 1994 . In data evaluation number and percentage distributions and ESS-B and ETS average emphatic scores have been compared via paired samples t test. Results: It was detected that after education, the average empathy scores of students were further statistically meaningful compared to their scores before education p=0.000 . As regards the average score of emphatic tendency, however, no statistically meaningful difference was determined before and after education. Conclusion: Emphatic skill development program has manifested that nursing department freshman students’ emphatic skills have increased remarkably whereas no changes have been observed in their emphatic tendencies.Keywords : empathy, nursing students
