Abstract :Objectives: To determine the anxiety and depression risk levels of pregnant women’s before the amniocentesis. Patients and Method: This is a descriptive study and it was applied to 207 pregnant women before amniocentesis between December 2010 - May 2011 in the Ege University Hospital Prenatal Diagnostic Outpatient Clinic. Individual Identification Form and The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale HAD were used in data collection. The numerical values , number, percentages, mean, standard deviation, chi-square, correlation, one way anova, kruskal wallis were used in analysis of the data. Results: The mean score of HAD-A was found 11.47 ± 3.1 min= 0, max= 17 before the amniocentesis in pregnant women. Taking 10 as cutting point, 76.3% of them were found to be at risk in terms of anxiety. The HAD-D mean score was found 8:40 ± 2.65 min= 0, max = 16 . Taking 7 as cutting point, 77.3% of pregnant women were found to be at risk in terms of depression. Conclusions: Although amniocentesis is a common obstetric procedure, psychological effects of it have been considered very few and ignored. In our study, anxiety was determinated in the majority of pregnant women before amniocentesis. The lack of information pregnant women should be identified to decrease their anxiety level which was seen before amniocentesis. Health staff should give information to them about the goals, benefits, risks and limitations of amniocentesis. Also their anxiety level should be reduced by using appropriate communication techniques during the test.Keywords : amniocentesis, anxiety, depression, pregnancy
