Abstract :Aim: This study was carried out to evaluate the knowledge of the intensive care nurses, working at a university and public hospitals in Zonguldak city center, about preventing catheter-related urinary tract infections with using urinary catheter.Material and Methods: In this descriptive study 96 intensive care nurses of 123 intensive care nurses took place. Data were collected by using 5 point likert type scale and a questionnaire to determine the knowledge and sociodemographic characteristics of the nurses. Data were evaluated by using numbers, percentages, arithmetic average, one way Anova and KruskalWallis tests.Results: It was determined that intensive care nurses did not have sufficient knowledge about urinary catheterization indications and the general points to be aware of patients with urinary catheter. On the other hand intensive care nurses had sufficient knowledge about the interventions while urinary catheter placement. Nurses who worked at university hospital, were educated about infection and worked 1-5 year in intensive care units, had higher score on catheterization. Conclusion: This study showed that the institution, the education about infection controlling and working years affected the knowledge of the nurses about preventing catheter-related urinary tract infectionsKeywords : urinary tract infections, intensive care, nurse, prevention, nursing interventions
