Abstract :Objectives:Having surgery increases the anxiety of individuals, affects self-esteem and body image negatively. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of orthopedic surgery on self- esteem, body image and state anxiety. Patients and Methods:The universe of this descriptive study is composed of 104 patients who underwent surgery in an orthopedics and traumatology clinic, and the sample of 80 patients. The data has been collected by using Identifier Characteristic Form, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Coopersmith Self- Esteem Inventory and Body Cathexis Scale. Results:The 62.5% of the participations are over 65 years old. The vast of the participations are women (76.3%) and married (63.8%). The level of state anxiety of young people before surgery has been found high when compared to old people. The level of state anxiety of single people has also been found high when compared to married people. The anxiety level of the patients who receive emergency surgery has been discovered higher than the patients who receive planned surgery. Conclusion:As the health team member who has spent the longest time with the patients, the nurses should treat the patients from a holistic perspective, provide patient education from the preoperative period to the patient needs.Keywords : Body image, self esteem, surgery, nursing, anxiety
