Abstract :Greenways play a significant role in structuring and developing our living environment in urban as well as suburban areas. They provide many recreational, environmental, ecological, social, educational, and economical benefits to cities. This article questions what makes high performing greenways by exploring the concept, history, and development of greenways in the United States. The paper illustrates the concept of linked open spaces and high performing urban greenways in residential communities and suggests a methodological blueprint for their implementation in the planning process. A case study of high performing greenways design in Gainesville, Georgia demonstrates the role of such a greenways system as an open space connector in residential communities. A detailed investigation of the planning process, approaches, and development concept is presented following an overview of the significance of the design method.
