Abstract :A2-Slab discontinuities are one of the irregularities in the plan defined in the Turkish Building Earthquake Code-2018 (TBEC-2018). This irregularity may occur due to reasons such as keeping the staircase section wide in buildings, leaving wide gallery spaces especially in workplaces and leaving large elevator shafts in buildings with small floor areas. Local openings in the slabs prevent the rigid diaphragm behaviour of the slabs by reducing the stiffness. This situation makes it difficult to safely transfer horizontal loads in the structural system. Besides, lateral translations increase due to slab discontinuities. Therefore, slab discontinuities are limited in the earthquake code. In addition to slab openings, sudden decreases in the plane stiffness and strength of the slabs also cause A2 irregularity. In this study, structural safety system of an existing reinforced concrete building having slab discontinuity irregularity in plan is investigated. Incremental pushover analysis procedure that is one of the non-linear analysis methods is utilized by considering the information of concrete, reinforcement steel and local soil class of the existing building. Afterwards, structural performance analysis is performed again by strengthening the existing building with column jacketing and reinforced concrete shear walls. Protastructure 2022 program has been used in the analyses performed in the computer environment. Damage situations of the structural members have been determined according to the analysis results obtained from the existing and strengthened buildings. Finally, the results have been compared and evaluations have been carried out. Keywords : slab discontinuity, strengthening, performance analysis, TBEC-2018
