Abstract :Energy deeply affects the strategy and policy mechanisms of countries. Electricity production constitutes one of the main forms of energy, which concerns countries’ production and consumption activities in a global context. In this study, the current status of renewable energy sources used in electricity production was presented for Turkey and World. Additionally, Investments in renewable energy sector was compared. The results reveal that the highest renewable installed electricity capacity in Turkey is hydropower (64%). In Turkey, share of wind, solar, bioenergy and geothermal energy was found to be 17%, 13%, 2% and 3%, in order. In Europe, renewable energy investments were $4.4 billion in Germany and France, $3.4 billion in Ukraine and $3.3 billion in Brazil. Renewable energy investments were less than $2 billion in Poland, Italy, and Norway whereas it was $2.2 billion in Turkey. This study enables the countries to benchmark their renewable energy potentials and investments.
