Abstract :Abstract: In this study, it was aimed at making teaching more entertaining in social studies lessons, which can be boring for some students due to being verbal lessonswith a high probability of being forgotten later on; making it possible for students to be responsible from their own learning and helping them make inferences about seeing whattheir deficiencies are and how they can learn better. In line with this aim, teaching applications which involve metacognition strategies in social studies lessons were used. In this study, which is based on using metacognition strategies, experimental design with pretest-posttest control groupmethod, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The study group of the study consists of 6th grade students who received education in two different classes of a state middle-school in the spring semester of 2013-2014 academic year. In the selection of the study group, the convenience sampling method was preferred. There are 37 students in the experiment group and 35 students in the control groupof the study. As for the collection of data in the study, "Metacognition Awareness Scale for Children,” whose adaptation to Turkish was done by Karakelle and Saraç (2007) and the "Evaluation Questionnaire for the Use of Metacognition Strategies” developed by Aktürk (2010) were used. The data of the study were evaluated using the SPSS statistics program. As a result of the analyses, it was concluded in the view of the findings that teaching applications which make use of metacognition strategies increase students’ awareness and their efficiency in using these strategies. Keywords : Metacognition, Metacognition Strategies, Social Studies
