Abstract :Purpose - This study was guided by three main objectives which are; to find out the effect of stretch performance goals on employee performance, to examine the effect of organisational support on employee performance, and finally, to examine the effect of organisational support on the relationship between stretch goals and employee performance Methodology - The study adopted a cross sectional design employing a quantitative approach. The questionnaires were distributed to a target of 159 respondents and 144 were retrieved. Thus a response rate of 90.6% was realised. Results- The results indicated that there was an insignificant negative relationship between stretch performance goals and employee performance and a positive relationship between organisational support and employee performance. Finally, the study found there was no moderation effect of organisational support on the relationship between stretch goals and employee performance. Conclusion results- Given the results, Microfinance institutions in Uganda are encouraged to take caution when applying stretch goals, to involve employees when setting performance targets, and to also consider setting stretch goals with a central aim to have the employee learn rather than entirely based on performance. Keywords : Stretch goals, organisational support, employee performance, micro-finance institutions, targets.
