Being one of the first poets of the Abbâsid era, he played a major role in shaping the poetry and literature of the time. After being taken to the palace by Saffâh, he succeeded in entertaining the caliphs and other statesmen alike with his sarcastic personality, joking words, stories and witty poems. He did not hesitate to make fun of himself and his closest relatives to make the caliphs laugh and obtain material benefits from them. Since he was very fond of entertaining, he was not sensitive about religious issues.
