Abstract :The author of this article examined different opinions of scientists about tourism as an object of scientific research. The author analyzed various approaches: tourism as a branch of economy, tourism as an intersectoral complex (market). The article analyzes literary sources. The author found that tourism does not correspond to the definition of the category "branch of economy", which was formulated by the UN Statistical Commission. Tourism as an industry has specific features. The author analyzed the economic role of the tourism industry in the Kyrgyz Republic according to the methodology recommended by the World Tourism Organization. The author believes that in order to analyze the interrelationships of such elements of the tourism system as transport companies, hospitality industry, travel companies and tourists, tourism should be considered as an intersectoral complex or market. If the research aims to study and assess the economic role of tourism, it should be investigated as a branch of economy. The author of the article focused on tourism as branch of the Kyrgyz Republic economy. The article formulates recommendations that can be used to improve state regulation of the tourism industry in the republic and to better use the tourism potential of the country.
