Abstract :The International Convention on the Control and Management of Ship Ballast Water and Sediments, which obliges the commercial vessels larger than 400 GT to treat their ballast water, entered into force on 8 September 2017. MEPC, affiliated to the IMO, linked the treatment schedule of the vessels to their IOPP renewal surveys at its 72th session in April 2018. At the same session, MEPC adopted the new guidelines for approval of the ballast water management systems, which was revised in 2016, as a code and made it mandatory for the implementation. While the installation process of the ballast water treatment system is planned according to the date of renewal of the IOPP certificate of the ship, it should be checked whether the selected IMO Type Approval is valid for scheduled dates; the suitability of the ballast water treatment systems to the ship should be assessed. Keywords : IMO, ballast water management, ballast water treatment systems
