A Study on Growing Conditions of Potato in Erciş District of Van Province

Abstract :Twenty-eight potato producers were interviewed in a sitratified random sampling methods at Erciş district of Van where potato has been heavily produced. The average occupational year of producers in potato production is 19,8. All of the potato seeds have been purchased from the merchants. It was determined that potato farmers had used the same seeds for 3,8 years. While the most of the produce (78,6 %) have sown the potato seeds in May, some of them (21, 4 %) have preferred the month of April. The average seed weight used for the potato producer is 57,4 g. Potato farmers have irrigated their crops about 7,3 times in a production season and have harvested the crop mainly in October. Harvested potatoes have been stored in mass and then sold nearby towns or neighbors but mainly to the merchants. It was determined that average potato yield at Erciş had realized as 31446 kg ha-1. According to the survey’s results, it was found that the more experienced farmers became, the more yield (34750 kg ha-1) they obtained; the older seed they used, the less yield (27180 kg ha-1) they obtained; the larger seed they used, the more yield (35100 kg ha-1) they obtained; the smaller seed they used, the less yield (23720 kg ha-1) they obtained; the highest yield (33890 kg ha-1) was obtained when they irrigated the potato 7 times.Keywords : Patates üretimi, tarımsal işletmecilik, işletme sorunları.
