Abstract :In this study, the effects of Gyttja (coal gyttja-CG and humus gyttja-HG) and lignite (L), amended at the rates of 1, 2, 4 and 8 % on activities of key enzymes (urease, β- glucosidase, alkaline phosphatase and aryl-sulphatase) involved in the N, C, P and S cycles and organic matter content of soils (SOM) were evaluated within a 180 days in situ experiment. According to the results, it was found that the enzyme activities increased with increasing rates of organic materials applied. Among the results obtained from different treatments, the results of urease, β- glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase were ranked in order of CG>L>HG and while the results of aryl-sulphatase was in order of CG>HG>L. Based on these results, CG amended soils showed higher values in terms of selected biological properties than HG and L. SOM content increased with increasing rates of three organic materials amended. The positive correlation between the amount of SOM and enzyme activities were found statistically significant at 0.001 levels. In the light of our results, coal gyttja seemed to be better alternative for agricultural use. Keywords : Gidya, linyit, toprak, enzim aktivitesi, organik madde
