Abstract :Philosopher, theorician, economist and psychanalist Cornelius Castoriadis (1922, Istanbul – 1997, Paris), is one of the most distinctive figures in the 21th-century French philosophy. His main philosophical theory, the autonomy project (Le project d’autonomie) could be considered as a theory he specifically formulated as a solution for the contemporary European crisis. For Castoriadis this crisis is so profound that it is necessary to develop a brand-new theory so that all the foundations, values and notions upon which the European system is built should be interrogated and re-established. In this respect, his project highly inspired by the Ancient Greek heritage, made quite an impact in philosophical and political circles in his time. In this paper, several notions of this Greek heritage which Castoriadis considers as a germ, rather than a model to be mimicked entirely, will be elaborated. The most important question to be asked here is which of the ancient Greek concepts could be considered as valuable for present-day European society. In the first part, the main principles of Castoriadis’ project of autonomy will be clarified, and the second part will be on the most significant ancient Greek concepts which could be revaluated and reformulated for today’s crisis. Keywords : autonomy project, Cornelius Castoriadis, Ancient Greece, democracy, polis
