Abstract :Nowadays, numerous studies confirm the need for early learning of foreign languages. By teaching a language from an early age, children develop agility and flexibility of thinking, listening skills, social interaction and self-confidence. In addition, it promotes cultural sensitivity in children. The interest of this theoretical study is to give information on nursery rhymes, which are often used in the teaching of foreign languages to children. In this study, first, we address the early learning of a foreign language and the use of nursery rhymes in language classes. Next, we briefly quote the characteristics and types of nursery rhymes and their roles in learning a foreign language. Finally, to give an idea to researchers and foreign language teachers who are interested in nursery rhymes and wish to use them in the classroom in order to motivate their learners, we provide them with examples of application to use with children as well as adults learning French as a foreign language. The first example is for children from 7 years old who can read and write. The second is suitable for illiterate children (5 or 6 years old).Keywords : Early learning, foreign language, French, nursery rhymes, children
