The Determination of 5th-Grade Students' Cognitive Structures and Misconceptions About Erosion and Landslide Concepts Through Word Association Test*

Abstract :The purpose of this study is to determine 5th-grade students\' cognitive perceptions and misconceptions about the concepts of erosion and landslide. The research is a descriptive study based on the survey model. The study population of the research was defined according to convenience sampling, which is one of the strategies of purposive sampling. In the study group, there were a total of 141 students (73 girls and 68 boys) who study in the 5th grade at Gazi Secondary School in Elazig, selected on the basis of volunteerism. In the study, the word association test prepared by the researcher was employed as a data collection tool. Word association tests are one of the alternative measurement tools developed to reveal the cognitive structures and misconceptions of individuals at the conceptual level. Descriptive analysis technique was employed to analyze the data obtained during the research process. The data collected using the word association test was analyzed and the number of repetitions of the answer words associated with each key concept was determined. The answer words associated with the key concepts were separated into break points and then presented as the form of concept networks. As a result of the study, it was concluded that 5th-grade students\' cognitive structures related to landslides were at a moderate level, while their cognitive structures related to erosion were poor.Keywords : Erozyon, heyelan, kelime ilişkilendirme testi, bilişsel yapı, sosyal bilgiler.
