Teaching Perception of Social Studies Teacher Candidates: The Case of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University

Abstract :Teaching is a profession that is considered sacred from past to present. Today\'s teacher candidates are the teachers who will raise tomorrow\'s generations. For this reason, researching the perceptions of teacher candidates towards teaching is important in terms of increasing the qualifications of educators of the near future. The results gain importance in terms of determining the current perspective towards the teaching profession, producing solutions to problems, if any, and developing both professional and emotional qualities of teacher candidates in teacher education. The target of this research is to explore the perceptions of social studies teacher candidates about teaching. The research was designed as a phenomenological research within the scope of qualitative research. The participant group of the research consisted of 150 volunteer social studies teacher candidates who continued their education in the spring of the 2021-2022 academic year at the Faculty of Education of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University. Data were collected by qualitative data collection technique through metaphors. In the data collection form prepared researchers, the participants were asked to create metaphors about the concept of teaching and express their reasons. Research data were analyzed by content analysis and descriptive analysis. It was observed that pre-service teachers produced 61 different metaphors regarding the perception of teaching. These metaphors were evaluated under 8 main categories: teaching as a guide, teaching as a trainer, teaching as an emotional commitment, teaching as a source of knowledge, teaching as a source of life, teaching as a valuable profession, teaching as a loss of status, and teaching as self-renewal.Keywords : Social studies, teacher training, metaphor, teaching profession., Sosyal bilgiler, öğretmen yetiştirme, metafor, öğretmenlik mesleği
