Abstract :Press photographs meet us as i nd i v i dual i mages or i n b i gger groups i n the context of a report or sequence, i n publ i sh or onl i ne med i a, publ i shed as pr i nt negat i ves, sl i des or d i g i tal f i les. Th e mass of publ i shed i mages follows pos i t i ve i mage patterns or photo types that are constantly repeated and handed down a culture of set recogn i t i on. So, these i mages not only subm i t to other photographs but also o ft en to subjects from other v i sual med i a, such as, for example, the pa i nt i ng. Although the draw i ng of boundar i es between art and press photography becomes i ncreas i ngly porous and the mutual reference of these genres i s w i dely used, i t i s st i ll worth ask i ng what spec i f i cally character i zes a press photo. F i rst of all, press i mages are photographs or i g i nated at a spec i f i c locat i on that want to make a statement about th i s place and a spec i f i c act i on. A certa i n representat i onally or l i keness i s common to them, so that they seem to re fl ect real i ty w i th spec i al truthfulness. In th i s sense, press i mages are used i n the i r respect i ve publ i cat i on contexts as i nformat i on carr i ers, wh i ch have a part i cular funct i on of test i fy i ng or prov i ng. S i m i lar to the h i story pa i nt i ng i n the 19th century, press i mages must v i sual i ze a complex s i tuat i on comprehens i bly and catchy. In order to guarantee and to support the i r readab i l i ty, almost all press i mages have an accompany i ng text or a capt i on.Keywords : Press Photography, Reality, Recognition, Representation, Photojournalism
