Paraoxonase Activity an Independent Contributor in SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Abstract :Background The aim of the present study was the estimation of serum paraoxonase (PON1) activity in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Material and Methods In this cross-sectional study we estimated serum paraoxonase activity in 73 patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and 73 healthy controls. Results The results showed that PON1 activity was significantly decreased in patients with SARS-CoV-2 (1.30±0.55 kU/L) than in healthy controls (1.913±0.48 kU/L, p<0.05). In addition, we found that the levels ALT/AST, bilirubin, creatinine, and urea tests were significantly increased in patients with SARS-CoV-2 than in normal subjects (p<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression reveals that PON1 activity is independently associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusions SARS-CoV-2 may decrease the PON1 activity in patients which needs more clarification.Keywords : Paraoxonase (PON), Severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronaviruse-2 (SARS-CoV-2), High density lipoprotein (HDL)
